Our Mission and The Pickle

It's pretty simple.  My buddy Sam and I love pizza.  His son Carson and my son Austin also love pizza.  Sam and Carson have their favorite joints, Austin and I have ours, and we wanted to share them with each other.  Plus, we are all always on the lookout for the ultimate pizza experience.  And we live in Indiana.

We discussed the idea off and on in 2017 and in late December kicked off the Indiana Pizza Tour.  This blog will be an ongoing account of travels across Indiana visiting beloved pizza restaurants and discovering new ones.  Each post will hopefully provide readers with enough information to decide for themselves if they want to visit or avoid the places we describe.  And hey, if you have a recommendation, let us know in the comment box.  We would love to hear from pizza lovers all over the Hoosier state!

Now on to our first stop...

Reason For Visit

It is probably important to note that Sam is a Purdue alum, and his family are all die-hard Boilermaker fans.  I, on the other hand, graduated from Indiana University, and my wife and children bleed cream and crimson.  Nonetheless, if a lion can lie down with a lamb, a Hoosier and Boilermaker can break breadsticks together, especially since Sam offered Austin and me free tickets to a Purdue basketball game.  We arrived early enough to grab dinner and decided to try The Pickle.

The Pickle has quite a broad menu, as you can see from their website, linked in the name above.  We were there for pizza, however, and that is what we ordered, along with breadsticks and wings.

The Main Course

The breadsticks came 16-18 to an order, and as you can see from the picture above, they are small.  Still, when the waitress says that many come in an order, you get excited.  The sticks were crispy and light with Parmesan and oregano sprinkled over the top and held in place by a light glaze of garlic butter.  The marina dipping sauce seemed a bit bland, and the nacho cheese seemed too processed, but the sticks themselves were quite good.

We ordered the boneless chicken wings with hot sauce, and these were tasty.  The sauce had a good kick, but was not so hot you would jump up and slap your mama.

As soon as the pizza arrived, I could tell that I would love it.  I am a big fan of hand tossed, and we had ordered a 19" half pepperoni, half cheese pie.  The crust was soft and chewy, and each bite offered a good mix of dough, sauce, and topping.  I could have eaten the entire thing by myself, but we were traveling with friends, and I didn't want them or my son to go hungry.

Sides & Extras

We were amazed by the fast and friendly service.  In fact, we had barely sat down when the breadsticks and wings arrived, and we had not quite finished those when the waitress delivered the pizza.  All of us tend to favor Coke products, so we were quite pleased that these were what The Pickle offered, with free refills from the self-serve dispenser.  The total for the evening was $37.

After dinner, the owner, whose name we failed to obtain, was kind enough to take a picture with us.

The Final Slice

Our rating system is quite simple.  We discussed the quality of the food, the service, the atmosphere, and the general experience and came to a consensus.  Our highest rating is four slices, and our lowest is an empty pizza pan.  The Pickle came in at 3.5 slices.
